EarthLink SPARK Development KitAvailable Information: Potential Developer Kit ApplicationsWe developed the EarthLink AVL Telematics Platform to demonstrate automotive software applications, to study how Linux and Internet technologies can be applied to the automotive environment, and to test the feasability and effectiveness of various systems, such as remote diagnostics, m-commerce, and location sensitive applications. The EarthLink AVL is a vehicle telematics platform that can be installed in any vehicle and implements security and communications features. EarthLink AVL combines GPS and two-way wireless data communications to enable vehicle tracking, notification, and control. After logging onto the service, EarthLink AVL users can track the location of any connected device via their web browser, wireless PDA, or WAP phone. Users can select multiple ways to be notified of critical events by e-mail, pager, wireless PDA, or WAP phone. Users can remotely unlock or lock car doors, receive notification if a security system is activated, or be alerted when a vehicle is moved. The SPARK Early Access AVL Development Kit provides tools to make it easy for developers to augment these standard features. It provides APIs and hardware support for optional connections for alarm sensors and triggers, remote controlled vehicle immobilization, remote controlled door unlock, panic button, and voltage sensors. Communications features include two-way ReFlex messaging with Internet access, RS-232 diagnostic port, GPS pass-thru, and an Ethernet interface. The EarthLink AVL platform could be applied to the following diverse applications.
